In A Game of Two Halves, former Bafana Bafana defender Matthew Booth goes beyond the headlines, trophies and dressing-room banter to explore the realities of life inside – and after – professional football. Built around candid conversations with some of the game’s most recognisable figures, this book is raw, funny, revealing and, at times, deeply sobering.
From fame, money and mischief to discipline, downfall and reinvention, Booth uncovers the lessons football teaches both on and off the pitch. These are stories of brilliant careers, missed opportunities, hard-earned wisdom and the fragile line between success and self-destruction.
More than a collection of football interviews, A Game of Two Halves is a warning, a celebration and a reminder: the game can give you everything, but only if you are ready for what comes next.
For players, fans and anyone fascinated by the human stories behind the sport, this is football as it really is - hilarious, brutal, beautiful and unforgiving.
“This book is not merely a collection of interviews, it’s a symposium of lived experience. The humour disarms you, the honesty educates you and the wisdom reminds you that football is a mirror reflecting South African society itself.”
— Steve Komphela
“The interviews feel like changing room banter – honest, loud, and beautifully human. Fans should devour it, and aspiring professional sportsmen and women will learn more here than on most traditional platforms.”
— Gavin Hunt
“This is the kind of book that will make you laugh out loud and then suddenly rethink your entire approach to your career. It captures the spirit, benefits and pitfalls of South African football perfectly-unpredictable, passionate, and full of character. I’d recommend it to every young player…no, person chasing the dream.”
— Carol Tshabalala
“Reading this book is like sitting at the feet of experience itself. The stories are not just entertaining, they are lessons disguised as laughter. Any young athlete who engages with these insights will understand that talent opens the door, but character and discipline keep you in the room.”
— Mark Gleeson
